Mariah

When I saw my cousin again,

I had walked all day,

my ankles swollen like my feet.

Her bright eyes made my journey worth it.

I was tired, my heart more than my feet.

She knew why IÛd come.

The shame was building.

I was running away,

blending my rounding belly

with the hills.

We wrapped our arms around each other,

carrying one another to her house.

The final footsteps filled me full of joy,

like coming home again.

The first long journey of my son and me,

complete.
