A Litany of Mutuality

This Litany of Mutuality celebrates the equal creation of men and women in the image of God, and with equal giftedness and purpose for carrying out kingdom work. The Litany of Mutuality is centered on the biblical mandates for submission to God and mutual submission to one another in the body of Christ. A single person should lead the congregation in each statement, and the congregation should respond to the leader wherever a line is marked “All.”

Leader: We are God’s temple. God´s Spirit dwells in our midst.
All: As believers, male and female, we are the temple of the Holy Spirit.

Leader: We are made in the image of God.
All: Male and female, we were created.

Leader: Brothers and sisters, be strong and steady.
All: We are enthusiastic about the Lord’s work. All things are yours, O God. Brothers and sisters, we are of Christ and Christ is of God.

Leader: As servants of Christ, brothers and sisters, we build the Kingdom of God and not our own.
All: For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power. We, men and women of God, have been given power over the devil. We have been given a spirit of power, love, and a sound and disciplined mind.

Leader: We have been fearfully and wonderfully made.
All: We celebrate that God has created us male and female.

Leader: We honor the call and gifts of God in the church—
All: not based on gender, ethnicity, culture, or race, but by God’s will and purpose.

Leader: Teach us to make the most of our time on this earth
All: so that we may grow in wisdom.

Leader: Give us gladness in porportion to our former misery!
All: Replace the evil years with good.

Leader: Let us see your miracles again.
All: Let our children see your glory at work.

Leader: Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love,
All: so that we, brothers and sisters, may sing for joy all our lives.

Leader: Protect those who trust in your name.
All: O God, rescue and deliver us.

Leader: For the Lord is our light and protector.
All: When our hearts are overwhelmed with injustice, lead us to the Rock that is higher than us.

Leader: God, be merciful and bless us.
All: May your face shine upon us, O God.

Leader: May your ways be known throughout the earth,
All: your saving power among people everywhere.

Leader: May the nations praise you, O God.
All: Let the whole world bless our God.

Leader: The kingdom of God isn’t ushered in with visible signs,
All: For the Kingdom of God is among you.

Leader: Let the children come unto me. Don’t stop them.
All: For the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

Leader: You sent us the Counselor—the Spirit of Truth.
All: The Spirit of Truth has come and guides us in faith.

Leader: When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child
All: but when I grew up, I put away childish things.

Leader: There are three things that will endure—
All: faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.

Leader: Let love be our highest goal.
All: As brothers and sisters, we will choose to speak truth in love.

Leader: May the grace of the Lord Jesus be with you.
All: For God is the source of all mercy and comfort.

Leader: We will resist all systemic injustice.
All: The Lord requires us, men and women, to do justly.

Leader: We will honor the heavenly creation of men and women.
All: We will fall in love with mercy, which triumphs over judgement.

Leader: We will submit to God and to each other—
All: men and women walking humbly with God.

Leader: Among the Lord’s people, women are not independent of men, nor are men independent of women.
All: All people come from God.
