The Golden Age for Women Preachers

By: Kari Torjesen Malcolm | October 31, 1992

What we need is another “Golden Age for Women” with Christian women released to preach the Gospel. This release must start in the sending churches because if the church that supports a woman says it’s a sin for her to preach, she’ll be silent.

Rising Above Our Language: Reflections on Our Metaphors for God

By: Michael Spooner | April 30, 1992

The Bible uses many diverse metaphors for God, including rock, light, mountain, shepherd, vine, woman, landowner, dove, warrior, lamb, father, mother, and countless others. We need to be aware of the diversity of these images as we build our concept of the person God is.

The Church’s Language About God

By: Elouise Rennich Fraser | April 30, 1992

Those who argue that the church must retain its predominantly masculine imagery for God and those who want to introduce into the church's vocabulary female imagery for God are in agreement at only one point: both are convinced that the integrity of Christian faith is at stake.

Keeping the Right Perspective

By: Kathleen Hayes | April 30, 1992

It seems that so few Christians understand the importance of including women in worship and the language of worship and of not speaking of God in solely masculine terms. I am convinced that when we limit our language, we limit God, ourselves, and others.

A Meditation

By: David Robert Black | April 30, 1992

Yes, God is our Father. That's what Jesus called God: "Abba, Father." That is how Jesus taught us to pray: "Our Father." We rejoice that God is merciful and forgiving, "like a father who runs to welcome the prodigal home." But God's also "like a mother who will not forsake her nursing child."

Jesus Calls Men and Women to Follow Him

By: Evelyn Bence | April 30, 1992

I've never heard a sermon on Jesus saying, "Follow me," that was addressed to men only. Yet, my analysis of the meditation is that I've apparently heard a few too many messages in the Church that have, intentionally or not, excluded me.

Black is Blessed: A Study of Black / African Women and Men in Scripture

By: Catherine Clark Kroeger | January 31, 1992

The Bible says very clearly that black is beautiful (Song of Solomon 1:5). But as I studied the black persons mentioned in Scripture more carefully, I found another message—the Bible implies that black is blessed. Not that being black automatically makes you blessed, but these people had an unusual way of reaching out to God— [...]

Anita, Clarence, and Me: A Reformation Day Meditation on Ephesians 6:10-19

By: Mary Stewart Van Leeuwen | January 30, 1992

As our text from Ephesians 6 reminds us, true reformation is never simply a case of trying to implement good intentions. Sin is both individual and institutional (yet another solid Reformed doctrine!) and it is kept effective “not [merely] by flesh and blood, but [by]…the rulers…the authorities…the cosmic powers of this present darkness… [...]

Women, Race, and Apartheid

By: David M. S. Cohen | January 30, 1992

"It was interesting taking communion from a woman this morning. I've even taken communion from an African before!" ... Although we would have been intellectually aware of the links between sexism and racism, this incident radically helped to clarify our thinking.
