We Are Family... Or Are We?
By: Claire Bonner | September 4, 2014
I was specifically interested in learning from single adults in complementarian churches like the one my friend attended—churches that often teach or imply that marriage and parenting are the Bible’s ideal for men and women. These questions became the basis of a six-month research project.

TOGETHER: Reclaiming Co-Leadership in Marriage
By: tim+anne evans | June 11, 2014
The majority of marriage sermons, books, and seminars focus on different infallible interpretations of a handful of controversial marriage texts. This often results in confusion surrounding the issues of equality, headship, submission, and authority.

On Being a Woman After God's Own Heart: Biblical Womanhood, or Cultural Womanhood?
By: Jenny Rae Armstrong | June 5, 2014
The women’s Bible study I was attending was going through A Woman After God’s Own Heart by Elizabeth George, one of those guides to “biblical womanhood” that offered a few good insights, but mostly just made me feel guilty and inadequate about my fledgling homemaking skills. Something about the theology seemed off, but [...]

Some More Remarks on Submission (Compliments of Phil Payne)
By: Paul Adams | May 7, 2014
The last half of Philip B. Payne’s book Man and Woman, One in Christ: An Exegetical and Theological Study of Paul’s Letters begins an exegesis of Paul’s later writings in Ephesians, Colossians, and 1 Timothy and deals with some of the most contentious passages dividing the Church over the role of women.

Tie-Breaker
By: Wendy Herrmann Smith | April 6, 2014
“Wives, submit to your husbands,” says Ephesians 5:22. Just be careful not to commit idolatry while you’re submitting.

If Men Give Love to Get Sex
By: Micah Murray | March 6, 2014
I’ve always wanted to get it right the first time. I don’t like to make mistakes. I don’t like to learn from experience; I’d rather learn from books. So when I was getting ready to propose to the girl who would become my wife, I read everything I could about how [...]

Whatever You Do (Part Three)
By: John Newton | August 21, 2013
Paul’s emphasis throughout his instructions is not on authority in relationships or on rights, but on serving. He does not give permission to a husband to go to his wife and tell her, “It’s your duty to submit to me,” or to parents to demand obedience from their children.

Whatever You Do (Part Two)
By: John Newton | August 14, 2013
If Paul had been typical for his time, he would have given instructions only to wives (to submit to their husbands), children (to obey their parents) and slaves (to obey their masters). But in each case Paul also addresses husbands, parents, and masters. By doing so, Paul puts everyone on an equal footing.

Whatever You Do (Part One)
By: John Newton | August 7, 2013
Paul breaks from the typical direction of his era by calling for mutual submission. He does not ask only that wives submit to their husbands, but he places a condition upon this submission and calls for mutual respect and love on behalf of the husband.

In Church or at Home? What is 1 Timothy 2:8-15 Really About?
By: Cynthia Long Westfall | July 26, 2013
1 Timothy 2:8-15 is the primary verse that has been used to exclude women from teaching and leadership in the church. However, a careful examination of the passage in its context shows that it is most likely addressing false teaching and myths about marriage and childbirth that were spreading from house to house. As in 1 Corinthians 11:34, [...]
