I know that many of you are in the same place I was. You are worried that if you change your mind on a doctrine, like the role of women in ministry, it will mean that you have sold out and become a liberal. Fine. Don’t change your mind. Nobody is forcing you to do so, especially not Jesus. However, I do believe that Jesus is asking the church, his bride, to love one another and to be open to listening to one another.

To see it otherwise is terribly faulty and holds dire consequences for the integrity and health of the church.

If men are being told to practice avoiding eye contact or the implication is to be fearful in connecting with women, then women will continually be viewed as the problem to be pushed to the side and will be further isolated from being fully involved in the life and ministry of the church. Less ministry opportunities are given to women in this kind of atmosphere.

Christians today are divided over patriarchy like they once were over slavery. We celebrate one gospel, but through different worldviews, each corresponding to differing beliefs concerning the Bible’s teachings on the nature, purpose, and value of humanity, all based on gender.
In Ephesians 5:21, Paul instructs Christians to submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Mutual submission is indeed good advice for the Christian walk. Why worry about who defers to whom? Instead, submit to one another and everyone wins.
