Marriage is meant to be lifelong, but broken marriage vows can be grounds for divorce. Based on Exodus 21:10f, biblical grounds for divorce include adultery, abuse, and abandonment. And in the gospels, Jesus was not asked about the biblical grounds for divorce (Matt. 5:31–32; 19:3–12; Mark 10:2–12; Luke 16:18), but about the legality of a specific kind of divorce, namely “any cause” divorce.
