From CBE’s 2023 Conference “Women and Scripture: Setting the Record Straight” in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Male dominance over women in the home, church, and society has been supported as God-ordained by interpretations of 1 Corinthians 11–16, Ephesians 5:21–33, and 1 Peter 3:1–7. Also, the restriction of the use of women’s gifts in the church has been supported by interpretations of 1 Corinthians 14:34–35 and 1 Timothy 2:9–15. This session will explain how these passages actually support how Christ’s redemptive work frees all people from patriarchy, calling women and men to share authority equally in service and leadership.
