Womb Currency

A womb,
the currency of the day.
Trade.
Hagar’s womb: tilled soil.
Gentile, slave,
used and thrown away.

Have you heard? God sees!
From dry ground,
a well.
Flip the exchange tables.
With an outcast womb,
God makes a covenant.

A womb,
bank of God’s promise.
Pray.
Sarah’s womb: a dried gourd.
The pain of childbearing,
the cursed ground, unyielding.

Have you heard?
From the rattling gourd,
a maraca!
Laugh! From God’s storehouse,
a Milky Way of generations.

A new way.
Currency becomes treasury.
From virgin womb,
Jubilee! Debts forgiven!
Come, Gentile.
Come, Slave.
New birth!

Follow Sarah,
Rachel,
Rebekah.
Follow dead wombs
to the empty tomb.
