CBE International (Christians for Biblical Equality) advances the gospel by equipping Christians to use their God-given talents in leadership and service regardless of gender, ethnicity, or class.
Equip Making the case that women's equality is a biblical imperative that helps all people thrive
Advocate Collaborating with individuals and organizations to cultivate women’s leadership
Transform Combatting abuse and domestic violence by recovering God’s vision for relationships
CBE, a 501c3 nonprofit, is supported by a community that believes the Bible, properly interpreted, calls women and men to lead and serve as equals, based on Scriptures such as Galatians 3:28.
CBE exists to promote the biblical message that God calls women and men of all cultures, races, and classes to share authority equally in service and leadership in the home, church, and world. CBE's mission is to eliminate the power imbalance between men and women resulting from theological patriarchy.
History of CBE
Disturbed by the shallow biblical premise used by churches, organizations, and mission groups to exclude the gifts of women, evangelical leaders assembled in 1987 to publish their biblical perspective in a new scholarly journal, Priscilla Papers. These leaders determined that a national organization was needed to provide education, support, and leadership about biblical equality, so CBE International (founded as Christians for Biblical Equality) was established on January 2, 1988. Men, Women, and Biblical Equality
CBE's founding statement, "Men, Women, and Biblical Equality," lays out the biblical rationale for equality, as well as its practical applications in the family and community of believers. The statement is available in more than 30 languages.
CBE is led by women and men who are passionate about communicating the biblical truth that men and women have equal authority and responsibility to advance the kingdom of God.
Through CBE, “I learned men and women are equal. God did not curse [women], he cursed the ground. He did not curse those he loved, his own image. We must read the Bible holistically to understand it.”
—Youth pastor in Uganda
With supporters, ministry partners, and local chapters from over 100 denominations and 65 countries, CBE engages Christians with conferences, adult and youth curricula, multi-media resources, award-winning publications, a blog, and more.
CBE collaborates with pastors, churches, schools, and NGOs around the world to eliminate gender-based violence and human trafficking, and improve girls’ access to education by raising the status of women.
Helping the Church Prevent Abuse
“I am currently on the journey of recovering from [clergy] abuse and have a God-given passion to help speak into and resolve the issue in our churches…I enjoy the connection with CBE and the resources you provide.” —Seminary student
In the US and around the world, 1 in 3 women are victims of physical abuse by an intimate partner, and studies show abuse is as common in the church as in society. CBE is working with church leaders to prevent abuse and create communities where women and men flourish as equals.
Healing and Hope
“Thank you, quite literally, for my faith. Without CBE, at this point my very dear husband would be grieving terribly over my loss of faith.” —CBE supporter
For more than 30 years, CBE’s articles, books, and conferences have provided healing and hope for Christian women and men around the world.
