The written word has long been a key player in advocacy. This has not changed, though the writing and publishing landscape has. This panel explores how egalitarian writers can effect change in a world saturated with content creators.
Too often the patriarchy of Bible culture has been confused with the moral teachings of Scripture. This workshop will explore how Christians working to end slavery challenged power, dominance, and self-interest in interpreting Scripture so that the church might become more effective agents of reconciliation in the world. What might egalitarians today learn from the interpretative methods of the abolitionists in their work as agents of gender justice?
Nearly 50% of the US workforce are women, working mainly in workplaces designed by and for men. Disadvantages in the workplace cut across secular and Christian organizations, disadvantaging women from enjoying meaningful work and motherhood, advancement in careers, and ultimately living out their God-given gifts and talents. Many of these disadvantages can be tracked down to deeply-held beliefs about women, work, and leadership, beliefs that Jesus sought to dissolve. This workshop explores the mutual prosperity of men and women in organizations when women succeed at work and gain a seat around the table.
The church’s outreach to the world is enhanced when the gifts given to all God’s people, including laity, women and youth, are affirmed and utilized. Ministry needs to be based on gifting not gender, on witnessing not categories, on biblical teaching not status. When gifting is denied because of gender, status, or age, kingdom ministry is diminished.
With males representing the primary perpetrators of violence, men must be at the forefront of calling out bad behavior and changing social norms. In this workshop, former UC Irvine violence prevention educator Eugene Hung discusses ways that men can promote healthy masculinity and stop violence in college settings.
