The Meaning of Sex

Is there any inherent meaning in sexuality, or does sex simply mean whatever we intend it to mean in the moment? Dennis Hollinger, president of Gordan-Conwell Theological Seminary, insists that there is meaning in sexuality—several meanings, in fact, which guide Christian thought and practice.

Message of Women

As part of the “Bible Themes” series within the larger The Bible Speaks Today collection of Bible commentaries and themes, The Message of Women is an exposition rather than a detailed commentary. It explores the life of women in Old Testament times and in the life of Jesus and the subsequent life of the early church. Without actually saying what is suggested by the title of their work, Derek and Dianne Tidball find a message for the twenty- first century church. At the close of chapter 12, the theme of which is “women in the encounters of Jesus,” the writers make the

Message of Women

The Message of Women is a very thorough and complete book about women in the Bible. It starts with detailed commentary of women under the old covenant, works through all the women Jesus encountered, and finishes with women in the early church communities.

New Dad's Playbook

The New Dad's Playbook is a book with practical, basic advice and descriptions about pregnancy and childbirth, with strong attention to the relationship of the expectant mother and father as a couple. What came through most clearly from Watson were love, care, and service for his wife and children. That helmet and child on the cover are held by a strong hand.

The New Evangelical Subordinationism?

This new book on the Trinity is not to be missed. It may well prove to be the definitive contemporary reader on the debate over whether the Trinity is stratified according to rank or not—God being equal in substance and equal in rank, authority, and glory or eternally differentiated in these aspects, a difference that may or may not reflect in human relations.

New Perspective Mary Martha

Mary Stromer Hanson’s recent publication is written for pastors, teachers, church leaders, and interested laypeople. It is particularly enlightening for Christian women and proves to be a valuable teaching tool as well as a call to ministry for women. As a teaching tool, Hanson’s book demonstrates that we must learn to use good hermeneutical methods to understand biblical characters and their stories correctly. As a call to ministry, Hanson has challenged women to see both Mary and Martha as different role models than we have previously been taught.

The New Testament in Antiquity

The strengths of this volume are numerous. First, students receive a thorough understanding of the cultural, historical, sociological, religious, and geographical contexts from which the New Testament emerged. Burge, Cohick, and Green carefully craft each element so that they are academically complex while suitably accessible, balancing brevity with depth.

Other Half of Army

I strongly recommend this book as a primer for those who question the role of women in ministry. It is refreshing to share the long journey he has been on in coming to grips with the difficult passages in Scripture.

Private War

Every time discouragement sets in because of the slow progress of egalitarian ideas, we ought to be able to reach over our shoulders and pull from the shelf a book such as Sapinsley's. The story of Mrs. Packard (1816-1897), set in the American midwest, should remind all of us how much has been accomplished by our forebears.
