Book Review

In the end, I find that Marry Him and Be Submissive stands as a good account of the author’s life and opinions but in no way reflects biblical instruction on marriage and/or submission.

As a fun read about someone’s life = A-

As a book about Christian marriage = D

Gender Conversation

The Gender Conversation is a book that emerged as a result of a symposium hosted by Marling College in 2015. The purpose of the symposium was to "deepen mutual understanding and respect, highlight common ground, clarify points of difference, and unite us all in a quest to learn from the Scriptures and live in the light of the gospel."

Year of Biblical Womanhood

Proverbs 21: 9 says that “It is better to live in a corner of the housetop than in a house shared with a contentious wife.”  While sitting on one’s rooftop is not technically a prescribed punishment for a woman’s belligerence, Rachel Held Evans decided that a minute of roof time per contentious remark of the previous month was an appropriate penance.  Because she is accused of making a mockery of the Bible with her new book, A Year of Biblical Womanhood: How a Liberated Woman Found Herself Sitting on Her Roof, Covering Her Head, and Calling Her Husband Master, one might think

Malestrom

James now turns her focus on men for the first time in her latest book, Malestrom: Manhood Swept into the Currents of a Changing World. Manhood, she claims, is under siege and not because there are women in the board room and men in the laundry room. The crisis that threatens men has ancient roots according to James, and the only real solution is to recapture the even more ancient imago dei we find revealed in those first two chapters of Genesis.

Band of Angels

Band of Angels is a well-researched narrative history of the women around Jesus and within the rapidly growing Christian community in its first five centuries.

Scars Across Humanity

If you want to expand your knowledge on the subject of violence against women, Scars Across Humanity: Understanding and Overcoming Violence Against Women by Elaine Storkey is a must-read. It is an engaging, investigative book packed with history, research, stories, outcomes, and possible solutions to the global issue of violence against women. It covers the past, present, and future of this violence that has many faces in all societies across the globe.

Liberating Tradition

Kristina LaCelle-Peterson writes a compelling outline of Christian feminism that serves as a valuable tool for the average evangelical seeking more refined and informed thinking about gender from a biblical perspective. The book's title hints at its ambitious purpose: to liberate evangelicals from cultural trappings that have misdirected our reading of Scripture, our family structures, and our models of church participation. The author invites all Christians to look at Scripture with fresh eyes and to listen to the voices and experiences of Christian women through the ages so that we can

The New Testament in Antiquity

The strengths of this volume are numerous. First, students receive a thorough understanding of the cultural, historical, sociological, religious, and geographical contexts from which the New Testament emerged. Burge, Cohick, and Green carefully craft each element so that they are academically complex while suitably accessible, balancing brevity with depth.

A Woman of Strength and Purpose

Strong-Willed Woman. What is your reaction to this phrase? Cynthia Ulrich Tobias, author of the book, A Woman of Strength and Purpose, and a self-proclaimed strong-willed woman, believes that if you have a negative reaction to the term “strong-willed woman,” you’ve probably encountered a woman who has let her strong will go sideways. The purpose of Cynthia’s book is to teach Strong-Willed Women (or as Cynthia abbreviates, SWW) to not let their strong will go sideways, but to direct their strong will to improve relationships, expand influence, and honor God.
