MINNEAPOLIS – May 2006
Biblical Equality and Justice Are Part of the Mission
of Christians for Biblical Equality
“[J]ustice and equality are mates. Aren't they? Justice always wants to
hang out with equality.” –Bono, of the band U2, in his
homily at the 2006 National Prayer Breakfast
Christians for Biblical Equality (CBE) is an international evangelical
organization that promotes the biblical basis for equality between men and women
in the church, world, and home. After twenty years of building a strong biblical
case supporting gift-based—rather than gender-based—ministry, CBE has now added
official statements to its mission that articulate the biblical basis for gender
justice.
According to the revised mission statement: “Injustice is an abuse of power,
taking from others what God has given them: their dignity, their freedom, and
even their very lives. CBE also recognizes that prohibiting individuals from
exercising their God-given gifts to further his kingdom constitutes injustice in
a form that impoverishes the body of Christ and the world at large.” CBE cites
Micah 6:8 as an illustrative verse for the biblical mandate to oppose
injustices.
To implement this emphasis on biblical justice, CBE is partnering with
Christian organizations in India to host a symposium that advances shared
leadership between men and women. The conference will take place in Bangalore,
Feb 15–18, 2007. CBE will also promote the biblical basis for gender justice in
its award-winning publications Mutuality and Priscilla Papers, and
through its online bookstore, Equality Depot (www.equalitydepot.com).
CBE’s 2007 international conference in Denver, Colorado will be based on
Psalm 37:6: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of
your cause like the noonday sun.” Establishing a biblical basis for gender
justice will guide workshops and discussions. Speakers from a variety of
Christian backgrounds and ministries will incorporate the Bible’s call for
justice by addressing issues such as shame and abuse, women in missions, and
antebellum evangelicals’ attitude toward slavery. CBE will also present its
first Micah Awards to Christians who exhibit extraordinary courage, creativity,
and tenacity in advancing biblical equality and justice by providing equal
access to food, education, legal services, and medicine for women and children.
