MINNEAPOLIS – September 2006

Christians for Biblical Equality to Promote Gender Equality in India

On February 15-18, 2007, Minneapolis-based Christians for Biblical Equality (CBE) will travel to Bangalore, India for a groundbreaking gender symposium. In joint venture with Pilgrim Partners, South Asian Institute of Advanced Christian Studies, and Union of Evangelical Students of India, CBE will facilitate the “Side by Side: Gender from a Christian Perspective: Men and Women Dependent on Each Other” conference.

This will be the first time a global partnership of Christians will meet, in India, to discuss the potential impact of a world wide response to gender inequality. The conference will offer sessions and workshops on theological topics, such as hermeneutics and church history, and on the practical applications of gift-based (as opposed to gender-based) service in India. Current justice topics such as women’s health and sexual trafficking will also be examined.

Many notable speakers will present these sessions, including Chae Ok Chun (former Dean of the Graduate School of Theology at Ewha Women’s University in Seoul, Korea), David Claydon (Canon of St Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney, and of All Saints' Cathedral, Cairo), Robin Claydon (the Lausanne Movement’s Senior Associate for Women in World Evangelization), and Richard Howell (General Secretary of the Evangelical Fellowship of India).

Tehmina Arora (secretary for the Christian Legal Association of India and workshop speaker), commented on the importance of this conference, saying, “In India, we have witnessed discrimination against women at various stages, whether at home, at the workplace, in society, and sadly on occasion even within the church. The conference provides a unique opportunity for Christians to understand and reflect on God's plan for men and women to work together side by side in His kingdom and our nation.”

More information and registration materials for this landmark symposium are available on CBE’s website: http://www.cbeinternational.org.
