MINNEAPOLIS—May 2005

Christians for Biblical Equality the Persistent David among Journalism Goliaths

Mutuality, the voice of Christians for Biblical Equality, received two awards of excellence at the annual meeting of the Evangelical Press Association (EPA) held in Chicago, April 24-27, 2005.

A first place in the Critical Review category went to Jessica Gaylord for “Rules to Date By,” a critique of the books, Datable: Are You? Are They? and The Datable Rules by Hayley Morgan and Justin Lookadoo. Chelsea DeArmond won second place in the Cause of the Year category for her article on ethnicity and scripture, “The Bible in Black and White.” Both are posted at www.cbeinternational.org, CBE’s Web site.

The academic journal of CBE, Priscilla Papers, received acknowledgement from EPA for scholarly excellence related to the Bible, theology, and gender (first and fifth place awards, 2001; second and fifth place awards, 2002). This year, it was the news magazine Mutuality’s turn.

With EPA publications such as Christianity Today and Sojourners’ distribution in the tens of thousands, Mutuality’s awards are momentous. CBE is among the smallest organizations in attendance, yet the spirited power of the writing and, more importantly, the overall message of biblical equality have garnered attention from the largest Christian press organization in the world.

Chelsea DeArmond, editor of Mutuality and now award-winning journalist, accepted the awards in CBE’s honor and expressed hope that Mutuality’s influence will continue to spread. Now with six awards to its name, CBE plans to further promote subscriptions to its two publications.

Mimi Haddad, President of Christians for Biblical Equality, expressed the organization’s enthusiasm: “When we learned that Mutuality was honored with two EPA awards, I was reminded of something Sojourner Truth, the great abolitionist, suffragist, and Church reformer said: ‘Truth is powerful and will prevail!’ I am convinced that God delights in using small, but passionate groups like CBE to ignite reform in the Church.”

Christians for Biblical Equality is a non-profit organization of Christian men and women from nearly 100 denominations who believe that the Bible properly interpreted, teaches the fundamental equality of men and women of all ethnicities, all economic classes, and all ages. CBE has been equipping churches, scholars, and laypersons since 1987. For a press kit or for more information, visit CBE’s website at www.cbeinternational.org.
