Abuse
and Remedy
The Abuse of Christian Women in India and 12
Studies on Biblical Equality
by
Jane McNally and Alvera Mickelsen
This little book on the abuse of Christian women
in India and the remedy, which lies in
understanding and promoting the true biblical
and God-given relationship between women and
men, deserves careful attention.
Jane McNally, who spent most of her life in
India, addresses the problem of abuse in Indian
Christian homes with accuracy and authority,
also with pain and passion. The solution is the
Word of God, and Berkeley and Alvera Mickelsen's
Bible Study outlines are of tremendous help in
this regard.
We need to understand and submit to the Bible's
authority and standard to redeem our family
life. |

Daughters of Hope
Stories of Witness and Courage in the Face of
Persecution
by Kay Marshall Strom and Michele Rickett
Throughout the world today Christians
continue to face intense persecution and
Christian women are most vulnerable. In
Pakistan, Christian girls are systematically
kidnapped, tortured and raped. In China,
underground church leaders are sent to labor
camps for hosting illegal home meetings. In
Sudan, Christian women are captured and sold
into slavery or mutilated and left to die. And
in many Muslim countries, a woman can be killed
by her husband or father for converting to
Christianity. In this deeply moving book, the
authors tell the stories of persecuted Christian
women from around the globe, giving voice to our
sisters persevering under the yoke of oppression
and injustice. Each section includes prayer
points and practical action steps. A great book
to read with a group. |

DOROTHY DAY
Friend to the Forgotten
by Deborah Kent
This fascinating biography chronicles the
life of Dorothy Day, known the world over as the
leader of the Catholic Worker Movement. Guided
by a strong commitment to social justice and by
deep religious ideals, Dorothy Day dedicated her
life to the service of others. Although she
opposed women's ordination, she serves as an
example of someone who turned her life over to
God and was devoted to the service of others.
Deborah Kent here recounts the trials and
triumphs of Dorothy Day's life, detailing her
role as the founder of The Catholic Worker
newspaper, as the founder of numerous “houses of
hospitality” that provided food and shelter to
the destitute, and as the champion of causes
that helped those in need. |

Faith of
the Outsider
Exclusion and Inclusion in the Biblical Story
by Frank Anthony Spina
This book offers a probing, insightful look
at the "outsider" motif running through the
Bible. Looking carefully at the biblical
narrative, Spina highlights seven remarkable
stories--including four about women--that treat
outsiders as strategically important
participants in God's plan of salvation. The
stories of Esau, Tamar, Rahab, Naaman, Jonah,
Ruth, and the woman at the well come alive in
new ways.
"Why has no one written this book before?
What an excellent idea to focus on this line of
outsiders within scripture and note how they
contribute to God's purpose (and often show up
the insiders)." —John
Goldingay, Fuller Theological Seminary |

Good
News About Injustice
A Witness of Courage in a Hurting World
by Gary Haugen
Accounts of horrors such as child
prostitution, state-sponsored religious
persecution, racial violence, torture and
genocide fill the international news. Jesus,
however, said, "Take heart! I have overcome the
world." The good news about injustice is that
God is against it.
Gary Haugen explains that God is in the business
of using the unlikely to accomplish justice and
mercy. This book offers stories of courageous
Christians who have stood up for justice and
also calls the body of Christ to action. Haugen
provides concrete guidance on how Christians can
rise up to seek justice throughout the world. |

Scandal
of the Evangelical Conscience
Why Are Christians Living Just Like the Rest of
the World?
by Ronald J. Sider
Evangelical Christians say they believe in
biblical moral standards and the power of God to
transform lives—yet recent surveys show that
most are not living any differently than the
rest of the world. From money to sex to racism
to personal self-fulfillment, a scandalous
percentage of Christians are violating biblical
standards with barely a twinge of conviction.
Ron Sider takes a painfully honest look at
this disconnect to reveal the depth of the
problem and contrast it with biblical teaching
on the transforming power of genuine faith. When
we apply these biblical teaching to our lives,
we will be more suited to close the gap between
who we are and who God calls us to be.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR • Ronald J. Sider is
professor of theology, holistic ministry, and
public policy as well as director of the Sider
Center on Ministry and Public Policy at Eastern
Baptist Theological Seminary. He is also
president of Evangelicals for Social Action,
publisher of PRISM magazine and a contributing
editor for Christianity Today and
Sojouners. |

Sex Industry
recording by Lisa Thompson

product—the sexual services of mostly women and
children—is in high demand around the world.
This presentation will discuss the many forms
and fronts of the sex industry, how the sex
industry maintains its supply of women and
children, and explain the primary and
cultural-based factors that drive demand for
commercial sex. Listeners will also learn about
the multiple and complex harms to individuals
caught up in the sex industry. The discussion
will conclude with a review of ways that
participants may get involved in the movement

THE ULTIMATE BLESSING
Rediscovering the Power of God's Presence
by Jo Anne
Lyon
Our affluent culture often equates blessing
with prosperity, health, success, and the
accumulation of material possessions. That
simplistic definition misses the ultimate
blessing--to know God and to be used for his
purpose. Discover the blessing that is deeper
than personal comfort.
"The Ultimate Blessing...offers
unforgettable images of God's redemptive
presence around the world....Based largely on
[Lyon's] firsthand experiences around the world,
Lyon writes graphically and simply about how to
use presence (God's and our own) to bless and be
blessed. It is hard to put this book down, but
the loving and faithful presence of God lingers
once you do."

Biblical Equality |

WOMEN I CAN'T FORGET
A Global Traveler Reveals the Struggle and
Courage of Women without Rights
by Winnie V. Williams
From Albania to China, Peru, India, Haiti and
South Africa, Winnie Williams describes the
everyday lives of oppressed women who are
degraded by cultural, economic, and social
conditions. Amidst almost overwhelming
oppression, she also uncovers their feelings of
hope along with a timeless desire to be loved
and accepted.
"Winnie Williams has given us powerful and
haunting glimpses into the lives of women in
other parts of the world. They are women who
have been painfully disenfranchised because of
religion, history, tradition, power, and male
domination. We need to hear their stories
because they, too, are our sisters." -- Raye
Nell Dyer, President, Baptist Women in Ministry,
Chaplain, Vanderbilt University Medical Center |
