EDITOR'S NOTE
Despite the huge amount of criticism The Da Vinci Code
has received from the Church, I cannot help but feel grateful
for the interest in Mary Magdalene that the book (and now film)
has spurred. How much longer would the Church have gone on
without questioning the myths we believed about her? As I think
back through the preparation of this issue of E-Quality
and what I have personally learned from it, I feel excited.
Maybe we are at a point in the Church’s history when we will
fully embrace the true Mary Magdalene—the broken
and hurting
woman who experienced the redemptive and loving Jesus, the
faithful servant who spent hours at her Savior’s side, the
courageous and loyal apostle who was entrusted with proclaiming
the good news of Christ’s resurrection. This issue of
E-Quality is an attempt to unveil that woman, apart from our
misconceptions and misunderstandings.
Our first article, written by our very own CBE staff member,
Julia Butcher, is a thoughtful and unique examination of The
Da Vinci Code film in light of the biblical feminist
worldview. Second, we are very excited to present a scholarly
contribution by Dr. Lidija Novakovic, who addresses seven
frequently asked questions about Mary Magdalene, including the
questions of her supposed prostitution and supposed marriage to
Jesus. Next, read a selection from Carolyn Custis James’ new
book, Lost Women of the Bible, in which Mary Magdalene’s
true story is presented for personal reflection and insight. And
finally, in light of Mary Magdalene’s partnership with Jesus in
ministry, we are proud to present a modern day story of a woman
and man working alongside each other. Kathy Escobar and Karl
Wheeler share their story of their church plant and how
pastoring together has encouraged and enhanced their ministry
experience.
Make sure to
not
miss the features on the right side of the
page! There you will find a book review of a brand new resource
to Equality Depot, Mary Magdalene and Many Others by
Carla Ricci. This book is available, along with several other
selections from our store, at 25% off when you use the E-Quality
coupon code found in this issue! You
will also find our featured audio excerpt from Dr. Alan Johnson
and Dr. Joan McKensie’s lecture, “A Critique of The Da Vinci
Code.” I am particularly excited to also direct you to our
featured blog thread on The CBE Scroll. Follow this link to
share your own thoughts and read others’ on the connection
between The Da Vinci Code and currently popular Christian
books on dating and gender.
Much prayer and thought has gone into this issue of E-Quality,
all with the hope that God would use these
resources
to encourage us in his perfect plan for men and women. May we
continue on the journey of discovering the true Mary Magdalene,
and may we be inspired and challenged by her faithful example.
Many blessings to you as you search!
Grace and Peace,
