CBE ATTENDS ANNUAL EVANGELICAL PRESS ASSOCIATION CONVENTION
Editors Receive Feedback, Tips and Encouragement from Attendees

By Jessica Gaylord

CBE editors Jaime Hunt and Jessica Gaylord attended the Evangelical Press Association's Annual Convention May 2-5, 2004, held in Minneapolis, Minn. Other CBE friends and members present were Kim Pettit, managing editor at Cook Communications and former chapter leader of CBE's Pikes Peak chapter; Agnieszka Tennant, associate editor of "Christianity Today;" and Jon Trott, editor of "Cornerstone Magazine."

The convention's program featured noteworthy plenary speakers, including Maxine Hancock and Mary Ellen Ashcroft. Hancock is the author of "Christian Perspectives on Gender, Sexuality, and Community," a book carried by CBE's book service, Equality Depot. Ashcroft is the author of several books carried by CBE as well, including "The Magdalene Gospel: Meeting the Women Who Followed Jesus," "Spirited Women: Encountering the First Women Believers," "Balancing Act: How Women Can Lose Their Roles and Find Their Callings" and "Temptations Women Face: Honest Talk About Jealousy, Anger, Sex, Money, Food, Pride."

Hunt and Gaylord also had the opportunity to meet with Diane McDougall from The Journey Group. McDougall evaluated three issues of Mutuality, CBE's news magazine and offered praise as well as several suggestions for improving the publication. Hunt thought the critique was very helpful and said, "I'm excited to start implementing the suggestions Diane had. I think her ideas will really strengthen Mutuality both editorially and visually."

Aside from the plenary sessions and the critique of Mutuality, most of the convention time was spent in workshops. One workshop featured a debate between egalitarian and CBE member Alan Padgett and complementarian Randy Stinson, executive director of the Council of Biblical Manhood and Woman. CBE president Mimi Haddad attended the debate. Haddad thought Padgett and Stinson represented their positions consistently. She also said, "I was encouraged by the open and supportive responses the egalitarian presentation received."

Hunt and Gaylord agreed that one of the most valuable parts of the convention experience was the opportunity to network with editors, writers and designers of other EPA publications. "I gathered nearly as many ideas from other editors as I did from the workshops," said Hunt. "It was also wonderful to share CBE's message with so many bright Christians." Additionally, the pair spent time with other CBE members and had an opportunity to be interviewed by Pettit for the Pikes Peak chapter newsletter.

During meals, both Gaylord and Hunt made important contacts with other publications, and shared the message of biblical equality with curious attendees. Gaylord said, "Some of the contacts we made expressed interest in featuring CBE in their publications, which is very exciting. It's another opportunity to get information about CBE and biblical equality into the evangelical world."
